Birgit Bentley-Stein
About
Birgit Bentley-Stein was born in Switzerland and moved to Weymouth in 1992. Her artistic practice is grounded in personal experience and shaped by emotional engagement, intuition, and a strong sense of place. Working from the heart is central to her approach, with feelings and lived experiences informing both conceptual development and material selection.
Nature has been a profound source of inspiration for Birgit, particularly her experiences of healing while immersed in nature. This has fostered an inherent appreciation for the environment and for being physically present within it. As an outdoor person who always appreciates the environment, she feels happiest in the elements.
The sea, shoreline, and natural rhythms have inspired most of her work, and it is very important to incorporate this as she lives and breathes it. She has spent many hours on the local beach sketching and gathering found ephemera.
Birgit completed her Art & Design Foundation Diploma at Weymouth College in 2023. She later graduated with distinction from the Foundation Degree in Art & Design Practice in 2025, developed through Weymouth College in partnership with the University of Plymouth.
She is also a member of the International Feltmakers Association, reflecting the importance of textile and mixed-media approaches within her practice.
During her time at Weymouth College, Birgit discovered a passion for working with metal and experimenting with materials. By contrasting rough and smooth surfaces, she explores form, texture, and depth to evoke mood and memory within her work.
